Development weeks
Development Weeks
A Week to Develop, Learn and Paddle
ABC Kayaking has developed a range of Paddlesport Development Weeks designed to suit paddlers and leaders across a broad range of disciplines and environments.
From white water to beautiful coastlines, and from canoe and kayak to SUP, our development weeks bring together professional coaching, personal skills and leadership development — all in one focused week on the water.
This year, we've expanded the programme further to include Surf Kayaking and Sea Kayaking, giving you even more opportunities to develop your skills across different paddlesport environments.
Leadership Coaching & Personal Skills
Our Development Weeks are designed around two key areas:
Leadership Coaching
Develop your leadership judgement, decision-making, group management and technical skills in realistic environments.
Personal Skills
Work on your individual paddling technique, movement, efficiency and confidence with professional coaching.
We can also incorporate training and assessment into the week, allowing you to work towards your goals while receiving continuous coaching and feedback.
Training Without the Pressure
We want our Development Weeks to be challenging, productive and enjoyable — without making the week feel like one long assessment.
The aim is to create a relaxed and supportive learning environment where you can try things, make mistakes, ask questions and develop your skills.
You'll have the opportunity to receive ongoing coaching, mock assessment feedback and practical experiencethroughout the week, so that when assessment day arrives, you know what to expect.

Leadership
Leadership & Expedition Training
Develop the Skills to Lead With Confidence
Over the past 15 years, ABC Kayaking has developed and refined a range of specialist courses designed to provide high-quality coaching and training across paddle sports and environments.
Our leadership training is built around more than simply gaining an award. It is about developing the judgement, decision-making, technical skills and confidence needed to become an effective and responsible paddlesport leader.
We offer training across a range of disciplines, including:
- White Water Kayaking
- Surf Kayaking
- Stand Up Paddleboarding
- Safety & Rescue
- Leadership and Advanced Leadership
- Expedition Skills
Whether you're working towards your first Paddlesport Leader qualification, developing your skills as an experienced leader, or preparing for a multi-day expedition in a Grade 5 environment, our courses are designed around the demands of the environment and the decisions you will need to make within it.
Leadership Is About More Than the Award
Good leadership isn't simply about knowing the technical skills.
It's about being able to read the environment, assess risk, make sound decisions, communicate clearly and look after the people you are responsible for.
Our training brings together technical paddling skills, leadership, safety, rescue and environmental awareness to help you develop the judgement required to make those decisions effectively.
With decades of personal kayaking experience and extensive leadership experience across different environments, ABC Kayaking brings a practical and realistic approach to leadership development.
From First Leadership Steps to Serious Expedition Environments
Your goals may be different, but the foundations remain the same.
We help you build the technical ability, leadership judgement and practical experience to operate confidently within your chosen environment.
From your first steps towards becoming a paddlesport leader to advanced training for demanding white-water and expedition environments, ABC Kayaking provides coaching that is practical, challenging and focused on developing real capability.
Learn the skills.
Develop the judgement.
Lead with confidence.
Personal Skills Coaching
Personal Skills Coaching
Coaching That Looks at the Paddler, Not Just the Stroke
At ABC Kayaking, personal coaching is built around one simple idea:
Better technique starts with understanding how you move.
With 30 years of personal kayaking experience and 20 years of teaching, I have spent a large part of my career looking at what actually makes a difference to performance on the water.
My approach combines that practical experience with my degree-level study in coaching and outdoor leadership, alongside a strong understanding of human movement and exercise science.
This allows me to look beyond simply saying “move your body this way” or “do the stroke like this.”
Instead, I look at you — your posture, balance, rotation, connection, timing and movement — and how those movements interact with your boat and blade.
Small Changes. Big Differences.
Kayaking technique can sometimes come down to very small changes in body position or movement.
A slight adjustment can change how effectively you connect with the water, how your boat responds, how much power you can generate and how efficiently you can transfer that power through the stroke.
That's what personal coaching is about.
I analyse your movement and identify the things that are really making a difference — then help you understand them, feel them and build them into your paddling.
A Different Approach to Technique
My coaching has developed through decades of paddling and teaching across different environments, from my early experience in sea and surf kayaking through to more than a decade of inland kayaking.
I've worked with different boats, blades, paddling styles and environments, and that experience has shaped an approach that looks at the whole system:
Body → Boat → Blade → Water
Rather than teaching a technique as a fixed movement, I look at why it works for you, and what needs to change to make it more effective.
It may be a different way of looking at kayaking, but it is an approach that has worked for me throughout my career — and one I have developed through years of coaching others.
Personal Coaching, Built Around You
There is no one perfect movement that works identically for every paddler.
Your body, your experience, your boat and your goals are unique.
That's why personal coaching is exactly that — personal.
Whether you want to improve efficiency, develop more power, refine your technique, gain greater control or simply understand your paddling at a deeper level, the coaching is built around your movement and your goals.
30 years on the water.
20 years teaching.
Academic coaching and outdoor leadership experience.
A technical understanding of kayaking.
And a coaching approach built around understanding how you move.
Boat. Blade. Body. Performance.
Let's find the movements that make the difference.
